Literature askew
Literature can be connected in many different forms, starting with the basic necessities of a book: depth and details, according to Faber in Fahrenheit 451. However, a common recurring theme that many of the stories we read this year contained inequality, be it racial, sexual, or social. The depth of many books was to provide prime examples of inequality in its common place in the World, such as the old Southern United States, or in an imaginary but realistic setting, and the details of each story were meant to explain the thoughts of inequality and the reason inequality existed.
The big idea of our project was incorporating the element of inequality to every book or novella we read this year, comparing and contrasting the inequality used there in other novels. Some stories that we read included more than one aspect of inequality, such as in the Crucible, containing both racial and sexual inequality. But in most stories, the most recurring form of inequality was of social inequality. The reasons were different for different books, but as in To Kill a Mockingbird, it was because of popularity and virtuosity; in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it was because of social standing and money.
A common question would be why we, as a people had inequality in our behaviors. However, superiority, is as natural to us human beings as is eating and drinking, so the least we can do is examine what leads to behaving unequally.
