Slavery in the country of the free
Before the Civil War in the US, slavery was a major part on the country and the world. Men that had a darker skin tone and originated from Africa were force to work for long hours for men that originated from the Europe. In the South, slavery had been practice so intensely that it seemed that the area would not survive if slavery was ended. The slave owners beat their own slaves into submissions and treated like animals rather than human beings. In the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, he portrays how prejudice and racism was a culture in the South.
In the book, a young boy name Huck Finn and his companion, Jim, goes on a long journey through the South to help Jim find his family. The twist to this story is that Jim is a black man that escape from his master. During this period of time, if Jim ever got caught after escaping, he would most likely lose a foot to prevent him from running or be flogged mercilessly. In the beginning of the book after Jim and Huck become acquainted with each other, Huck was scared of Jim because he had been taught when he was young that black men were animals and uncivilized and their owners were trying to make them better people. But later on, Huck learns that Jim's life is at stake and chooses to help Jim by sneaking him around and protecting him from other white men. Later Huck begins to learn about the racism, prejudice, and cruelty that Jim has to deal with every day like Jim having his family separated because he was a man that could do labor work for a farm owner while his wife and children could do house work for a rich person.
